Your affiliate marketing success is only as good as the affiliate program you signed up to earn commission from. It is nice to think that you can just sign up for any program, put up some links to it, and earn tremendous commissions from it. The truth of the matter, however, is that not all affiliate programs are created equal.

Join programs you are personally passionate about.

Before you can even decide if a program is good for you, make sure it is a topic that you have a personal passion for. Most people will tell you to join programs to sell what is hot at the moment to capitalize on it’s popularity. That’s a mistake. Join an affiliate program you truly like so that you’ll put more effort into it and create better marketing for it.

Look at it’s current online reputation.

Many affiliate programs are part of a larger affiliate network. This is the best way to join affiliate programs as a network isn’t going to allow poorly run programs into their network. However, if you come across something that isn’t involved with any network, do a little research first to find out how many affiliates they have and if they keep them for any length of time.

What is the commission rate?

Looking at the commission rate of an affiliate program has to do with more than how much you will earn. It has to do with how much you eventually will earn after your promotions. If you spend less per click than you receive per sale then that’s a good rate. If it’s the other way around, then it’s not worth promoting that program.

Can you make passive commissions?

Passive commissions basically means earning commissions from people who sign up for the affiliate program with your affiliate link. Several programs do this and you are able to earn a smaller commission when they make a sale with their affiliate link. This is a great feature as you don’t have to do any more advertising and you’re earning money from their efforts.
